One Simple Surgery = One Saved Life

No pet should face preventable suffering—and yet many do…

Just this week, a local pet owner experienced the heartbreaking loss of their beloved dog to pyometra, a sudden and severe uterine infection that affects unspayed female dogs. Despite every effort to save her, she passed away — a tragedy that could have been prevented with one simple surgery.

We share this story not to alarm, but to raise awareness.

Spaying and neutering isn’t just about preventing litters — it’s about preventing suffering, saving lives, and giving pets the healthy futures they deserve.

In this issue, we’re diving into why spay and neuter matters now more than ever — with real numbers, local resources, and a look at how something as small as scheduling an appointment can have a life-changing impact.

Why Spay & Neuter Matters

Spaying eliminates the risk of uterine infections like pyometra and drastically reduces the chance of mammary tumors — which can be malignant in up to 90% of cats and half of dogs. Neutering protects male pets from testicular cancer and prostate disease, while also helping reduce roaming, fighting, and marking behaviors.

When pets are spayed or neutered, they’re healthier, calmer, and often live longer, happier lives.

The Hidden Cost of Waiting

It’s easy to think, “I’ll schedule it later.” But the truth is, waiting can be dangerous — and expensive.

Emergency surgery for pyometra: $1,200–$3,000+

Treatment for mammary tumors: $800–$2,500+

Caring for an unplanned litter: $400–$1,000+

Testicular cancer treatment: $500–$1,500+

 Compare That To Prevention

Even the highest-cost low-cost option is a fraction of what an emergency surgery can run — a small investment now can prevent thousands in vet bills later.

 Low-Cost Spay/Neuter (MSPCA Cape Cod):

$125 for cats, $250 for dogs

Full-Pay Spay/Neuter:

Cat Spay $502.67, Cat Neuter $394.36
Dog Spay $899.98, Dog Neuter $735.06
