Spooky… or Super Lucky? Let’s Talk Black Cats!

In the spirit of Halloween, when ghosts, goblins, and black cats take center stage, it’s easy to see how these mysterious felines got tangled up in spooky folklore. If you’ve ever jumped a little at the sight of a black cat or wondered why they’re called “bad luck,” you’re not alone!

Centuries of superstition—linking black cats to witches, magic, and mystery—have given them an undeserved eerie reputation. But here’s the twist: black cats aren’t bad luck at all. In fact, in many cultures, they’re considered symbols of good fortune, protection, and prosperity!

So this week, as we celebrate National Black Cat Day (Oct 27) and National Cat Day (Oct 29), we’re busting myths, sharing fun facts, and celebrating all cats—especially the ones who get passed over simply because of their color.

National Black Cat Day: October 27th

To celebrate National Black Cat Day, we’re sharing some fun facts and busting myths about these mysterious, magical felines!

Fun Facts About Black Cats:

In Japan and the U.K., black cats are considered lucky charms.

In ancient Egypt, black cats were sacred and believed to bring protection and prosperity.

Most black cats have yellow or golden eyes.

Black cats tend to be male.

There are 22 recognized breeds that can have solid black coats.

While black is the most common fur color in cats, it’s actually rare to find one that’s pure jet black from head to tail—many have hints of brown or “rust” in their fur.

Black cats may be more resistant to certain diseases, thanks to their genetic makeup.

They’ve made their mark in history and pop culture, from Salem in Sabrina the Teenage Witch to Thackery Binx in Hocus Pocus.

Despite their charm, black cats (and dogs) still face some of the lowest adoption rates in shelters. This “Black Dog and Cat Syndrome” is based purely on superstition and perception—but you can help change that!

National Cat Day: October 29th

While every day feels like Cat Day to those of us who love our feline friends, National Cat Day—celebrated every October 29—was created with a deeper purpose: to raise awareness of the number of cats that need loving homes and to encourage adoption from shelters and rescues.

Founded in 2005 by pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige, the day celebrates the joy and companionship that cats bring to our lives while reminding us that millions of cats across the country are still waiting for their forever families.

So, on this National Cat Day, give your feline companion a little extra love—and if your home has room for one more, consider adopting a cat in need. Your purrfect match might be a sweet black cat (or dog) waiting nearby. Visit a local rescue or adoption center to learn more.

A Purr-fect Ending

This Halloween season, let’s rewrite the story for our furry friends and help spread the word so more pets can find loving families and their purrfect ending. Here’s to spreading kindness, breaking myths, and keeping the good-luck cats close!
