Creating A Safety Net For Local Pets

This week, we’re diving into an important part of our mission: creating stronger safety nets for pets.

At Plymouth Helping Hands for Animals, that means being here for local pets and pet owners when unforeseen veterinary costs become overwhelming—but it also means helping our community understand the other resources available to prepare before urgent situations arise.

Just last weekend, at the Veterinary Urgent Care Center (VUCC) open house, we picked up some valuable insights about pet insurance—a topic we haven’t covered yet, but one that is an important option for pet owners to consider.

We’re taking a closer look at the different layers of support that help pet owners prepare ahead of time—and the role our nonprofit plays when those options aren’t enough.

When more resources are in place before problems become more serious, fewer pet owners are forced into heartbreaking decisions, and more pets receive the care they need. When it comes to caring for our furry friends, a little preparation can go a long way!

Pawsitively Prepared: Pet Insurance

Meeting the team from Trupanion Pet Insurance at VUCC’s open house gave us a powerful reminder of just how quickly veterinary emergencies can happen.

We learned that Trupanion was founded after one family faced a heartbreaking situation when their young dog needed emergency surgery they simply could not afford. That painful loss inspired the creation of a better system—one designed to help other pet owners avoid facing the same impossible choice.

One of the simplest ways they illustrate this reality really stuck with us: how quickly something as small as a $3 squeaky toy can turn into a $15,000 emergency surgery if a pet accidentally swallows it or suffers an internal blockage or injury. What starts as everyday play can, in an instant, become a life-threatening situation requiring urgent, specialized care.

Another real-life example they shared was Charlie, a 14-week-old Pomski who had only been in his new home for two weeks when he jumped off a bed and broke his leg. His treatment totaled nearly $10,000—a sudden expense no pet owner ever plans for. Thankfully, about 90% of that cost was covered by Trupanion, allowing his care to stay focused on healing instead of the bill.

Many pet owners don’t think about pet insurance until something unexpected happens, but having coverage in place ahead of time can make a stressful moment feel a little more manageable—allowing the focus to stay on treatment and recovery rather than cost.

Those examples really hit home for us.

We see versions of these stories every day—pet owners who are doing everything right, then suddenly facing veterinary costs they never planned for. While Trupanion helps people prepare in advance through insurance coverage, our veterinary medical assistance program serves as a nonprofit safety net funded entirely by donations from compassionate supporters like you.

Different paths. Same goal: helping pets get the care they need when it matters most.

Pawsitively Practical: Affordable Pet Care

Pet insurance can be one way to prepare for unexpected emergencies—but for pet owners who may not have coverage, or who are simply looking for affordable options for routine care, low-cost wellness programs are another important piece of the safety net.

Part of our role at Helping Hands is to help pet owners navigate these options and connect them with affordable local care resources whenever possible, so they’re not navigating these decisions alone.

Many local veterinary providers, including VCA, Banfield, and Vetco, offer affordable wellness plans that help cover essentials like wellness exams, vaccines, screenings, and microchipping. Programs like VCA’s CareClub, for example, are designed to make preventive care more predictable through monthly wellness plans focused on routine visits and early detection.

For pet owners wondering how this compares to a traditional veterinary visit, Vetco is one example of how wellness clinics can help make routine care more accessible and budget-friendly.

How Vetco Keeps Care Affordable:
→ Operate low-cost walk-in clinics inside Petco stores
→ Offer bundled vaccination packages at discounted prices
→ Typically charge no exam fees for vaccine visits
→ Provide convenient evening and weekend hours

Because these clinics operate with lower overhead costs, they’re often able to make preventive care much more affordable. For many pet owners, that can mean staying on top of routine care and catching health concerns early—before they turn into larger, more serious, and costly medical issues.

Pawsitively Pressing: What The Numbers Show

This is where the bigger picture comes into focus—affordability is a serious barrier to care.

Research shows that at least one-third of pets in the United States do not see a veterinarian regularly, and an estimated 50% of geriatric and senior pets do not receive routine veterinary care.

A national study found that the overwhelming barrier for all groups of pet owners—and for every type of care, whether preventive, sick, or emergency—is financial.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of veterinary care has risen approximately 10% each year over the past several years, about three times higher than the average of all consumer items combined, and has increased by 60% over the past decade.

These numbers are exactly why planning ahead matters. Delaying veterinary care may feel necessary in the short term, but untreated issues often become more serious, more painful for pets, and more expensive over time.

And We’re Off... To Derby Day!

All of these pieces—pet insurance, affordable wellness care, and our veterinary assistance program—work together to create a stronger safety net for pets and the people who care for them.

We’re proud to be one of those final layers of support when pet owners need it most. And like any safety net, ours is only as strong as the community that helps hold it up.

That’s exactly what makes our upcoming Derby fundraiser so important. The countdown is on: just 15 days away from the Kentucky Derby Party hosted by Alden Park on May 2nd!

We are thrilled to be this year’s charitable beneficiary of this fabulous event, and every dollar raised helps strengthen this network of support for pets right here in our community.

Funds Raised From Derby Day Directly Support:
→ Emergency and essential veterinary medical assistance for local pets in need
→ Pet food pantry supplies for pet owners facing hardship

Have you grabbed your tickets yet? Still have a raffle prize or auction item to donate? There’s still time!
