Kindness Unleashed!
One phone call. One frightened pet owner. One community ready to help.
Just the other day, we received an emergency call that reminded us exactly why Plymouth Helping Hands for Animals exists. What followed was a remarkable chain of kindness that changed the outcome for one local pet—and reminded us just how much our community can accomplish when people come together.
Keep reading to meet Loki, learn how one generous supporter helped give him a second chance, and find out how you can help local pets this month.
Meet Loki
Loki is a two-year-old cat whose life took an unexpected turn when he developed a life-threatening abdominal obstruction.
His owner, Ashley, had already done everything she could. After bringing him to Wareham Animal Hospital Urgent Care for an exam, subcutaneous fluids, and anti-nausea medication, she had exhausted her available funds before the diagnostics and treatment Loki urgently needed.
That's when Plymouth Helping Hands for Animals was able
to step in.
Thanks to the Michelle Koppang Compassionate Care Fund, we covered the cost of Loki's x-rays, which confirmed the life-threatening obstruction, as well as his emergency consultation at Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists. We also made a $500 down payment toward the very costly emergency surgery he needed that same night. That initial support made all the difference.
Because Helping Hands was able to help right away with a charitable contribution, Ashley qualified for and was granted a $6,000 Mason Fund grant through Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists, to cover Loki's life-saving surgery, which was performed that very same night.
Today, we're happy to report that Loki is home and recovering well! Ashley is incredibly grateful to everyone who helped give Loki a second chance.
Loki's story is a wonderful reminder that kindness has a ripple effect. One act of generosity can inspire another, creating hope when it feels like there are no options left.
The Kindness Behind Loki's Happy Ending
Loki's story wouldn't have been possible without the Michelle Koppang Compassionate Care Fund.
Michelle, a local Realtor and longtime friend and supporter of Plymouth Helping Hands for Animals, has committed to donating $250 from every real estate closing this year to help local pet owners facing financial hardship with veterinary medical expenses.
Her generosity allowed us to say "yes" when Loki needed us most—and it will continue to help local pets facing future emergencies.
If you'd like to help ensure we're ready for the next emergency call, you can also donate directly to the Michelle Koppang Compassionate Care Fund. Every contribution helps provide hope—and lifesaving veterinary care—for local pets when they need it most.
Be Part Of The Next Happy Ending
Loki's story is just one example of what's possible when a community comes together.
Every day, generous sponsors, donors, and community partners help make sure we're ready to answer the next call for help—whether it's an emergency veterinary expense, a bag of pet food, or another pet owner facing an unexpected crisis.
Together, they're helping create more stories like Loki's.
You can even choose exactly where your sponsorship makes an impact—from supporting our community pet food pantries and emergency veterinary care to another Helping Hands program that's especially meaningful to you.
Every sponsorship—big or small—helps ensure we're ready for the next pet who needs us.

Here's Your Next Opportunity To Help
Our upcoming Market Basket Pet Food Drive is one of the easiest ways to make a difference. Keeping our community pet food pantries stocked is truly a team effort, and every bag of food or package of treats helps local pets stay healthy and well fed.
We'll be back at Market Basket on Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. collecting pet food and supplies for local pets in need.
We're incredibly grateful to Market Basket for once again inviting us to host this event. If you're shopping that weekend, we'd love for you to stop by, say hello to our volunteers, and, if you're able, pick up an extra item or two to donate.
While you're shopping, keep an eye out for some of our pantry favorites! Brands like Pedigree, Purina One, Beneful, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Meow Mix, Kit & Kaboodle, and Little Cesar are always appreciated.
We do our best to keep familiar brands on our shelves so pets can stay on the diets they're already eating, helping reduce digestive upset during an already stressful time.
Every extra item added to your cart helps fill a bowl for a local pet in need.
Until Next Time…
As we've shared this week, one act of kindness has a way of inspiring another.
Whether it's helping save a life, stocking a pantry shelf, or becoming a sponsor, every act of kindness helps write the next happy ending.
Thank you for being part of our Helping Hands community.
We hope to see you at Market Basket!
